Premetto che i libri di narrativa non fanno per me, poi i romanzi rosa ancora meno. Ho letto questo libro, perché me lo ha prestato una cara amica e perché volevo farmi un'idea sulle opere di Murakami.
Leggere questo libro è stato, solo a tratti, piacevole, perché credo che la traduzione italiana di Amitrano abbia reso bene i passaggi più poetici del testo.

Non penso neanche di voler spendere troppe parole per parlare della misoginia intrinseca in questo libro, perché ho già annotato troppe cose mentre leggevo. Lascerò solo degli spunti di riflessione per chi ha già letto il libro:

- Perché se gli uomini fissano le gambe di Midori quando indossa una minigonna, la colpa viene data a lei e lei riconosce che è colpa sua, non degli uomini che la guardano?
- Perché a metà libro è inclusa una scena di sesso dettagliata e lunga quattro pagine tra una trentunenne e una tredicenne, se non è neache utile alla trama? Narrata in discorso diretto da un personaggio che si vergogna solamente di essere una "lesbica assatanata" e non una pedofila? Perché doveva essere la bambina a sedurre con insistenza la signora?
- Perché Naoko prima di suicidarsi parla dettagliatamente dell'unica volta che ha fatto sesso con il protagonista? Perché non avrebbe potuto parlare di qualcosa di più profondo e non carnale? Perché l'autore è convinto che una donna che viene penetrata dal pene di un uomo possa essere cambiata per sempre da una così semplice azione? Perché l'autore pensa che sia possibile che l'emozione positiva più grande che abbia sentito una donna nella sua vita possa essere questa, e che sia plausibile che dopo non abbia più potuto sentire nulla?

Come ammette Murakami stesso nel Postscriptum:

Penso che questo libro possa piacere o non piacere proprio come posso piacere o non piacere io come individuo.

Già, signor Murakami. Non mi interessava leggere le sue fantasie sessuali in maniera dettagliata. Non è stato bello scoprire che, nel suo immaginario, bisognerebbe vergognarsi di più di essere lesbiche che di essere pedofili o degli stupratori. E, mi dispiace, ma il pene non ha il potere di cambiare la vita di una donna per sempre. Non mi piace il suo libro e non mi piace lei come persona.

Norwegian Wood was my first Murakami novel, and honestly, it didn’t leave much of an impression. The story follows Toru Watanabe, an 18-year-old student in Tokyo, as he tries to navigate grief after losing his best friend. He reconnects with Naoko, his friend’s ex-girlfriend, and the two form a fragile, emotional bond. When she suddenly disappears, Toru is left waiting and uncertain, until she starts writing him letters from a remote sanatorium. Meanwhile, he develops a connection with Midori, a fellow student who couldn’t be more different from Naoko.

The book is largely about Toru’s emotional paralysis, caught between two women, two worlds, and a lingering sense of loss. Murakami’s writing is immersive, and I did appreciate the quiet atmosphere he creates. There’s a certain beauty in how he captures mundane moments and everyday sadness. The references to Western music and literature helped ground the story in something familiar and relatable.

But despite the strong mood and setting, I found the novel frustrating. The female characters often feel like hollow projections, existing mainly to support or seduce the protagonist. Almost every woman in the book either sleeps with Toru or wants to, and the ones who don’t are written off as mentally unwell or broken. Some of the sexual encounters are deeply uncomfortable, and one, involving a minor, crosses a clear moral line. These scenes didn’t feel reflective or honest, they felt indulgent.

Murakami admits in the afterword that this novel is a version of the youth he wished he had, and that lens makes sense, it reads more like a fantasy of emotional depth than the real thing. Norwegian Wood had all the ingredients for a powerful, intimate coming-of-age story, but it never quite delivered for me. Beautifully written in places, yes, but hollow at its core.
