This book is not my typical read but I was intrigued by the plot of this debut  Big Chief explores the lengths people will go to secure their legacy against the backdrop of politics, corruption and tribal life / indigenous sovereignty.

The author did a great job of immersing you in the landscape of Passage Rouge Nation.  It’s a windy plot with lots of sub storylines woven in which was somewhat confusing at times.   That being said, his characters are predominately well developed and each of them have a purpose of being there.  However they got lost in the vast amount of inner monologue the main character - Mitch provides.

Thank you Scribner /  Simon & Schuster  for a physical proof in exchange for an honest review.

I looked up the word anti-villain a few weeks back, and feel like a character who is a villain but isn’t trying to be a villain but is trying to just be a good person but ends up messing things up and then leaning into that….yes, that’s Mitch Caddo to me.

I love how the perspective of this book feels like it’s a person who would normally be a side character. Not the president. Not the opponent. Just a high ranking staffer who has a story and perspective all his own. I felt that add to the tension in the best way. The political intrigue, identity themes, micropolitics, and family dynamic aspects felt complete and well framed. The story itself was so captivating and strong. I needed to know what was going to happen and the ending was right. Such a great book!
