Big Chief takes place during a tribal election on the Passage Rouge reservation in Wisconsin. It’s about belonging & feeling out of place in your community. And about the extremes people will go to hold on to power. Mitch Caddo has been the man keeping things running behind the scenes of Mack Beck’s presidency. Mitch & Mack are childhood friends who each have a complicated history with their families & community. Mack’s estranged sister Layla is working for the opposition. She’s also a former friend & love interest of Mitch. Political ambition, dirty tricks, corruption, complicated relationships, police brutality- there’s a lot going here but it all blends together seamlessly.

challenging hopeful informative reflective medium-paced

Mitch could not get anything right for the life of him! Growing up on the Rez AND working with tribal politics you are the enemy. You’re either for the people or against and this goes along with growing up with these same people since you were a kid. Everything hits too close to home.

Mitch was like the rope for tug of war. He was getting pulled into a lot of things, left and right, he probably shouldn’t have. He tried to help who he could but there was still layers of secrets that he didn’t know of and always turned out to be the bad guy.

Even though fiction, it did bring out a lot of truth on how tribal politics work on every nation.

Minor spoiler and the best part is when Layla speaks up for everyone especially when her own brother was the tribal leader.
