This better be a series! It can’t end. I need more witches!
I almost DNF in the beginning, but I'm glad I didn't because I ended up really liking it by the end.

The plot was intriguing and I was hooked in the beginning. The middle was a bit of a slog for me, but it picked up again at the end.
Lucky & Stella were great characters, I felt invested in what happened to Lucky. However, I didn't get the same from the other characters (other than maybe Lettie).
The dream sequences were the best part of this book, they were what really hooked me. Wish we got more of/from them.

Quite a ride.
I deeply enjoyed this book. On its surface, it's a road trip book about an orphaned indigenous girl and her senile grandmother on their way to a found family that's more like them than they could guess. There is a prophecy, a mysterious oracle, a quest, and a powerful adversary.
Beyond that, though, it's about femininity in many forms. It's about chosen family. It's about patriarchy and power. It's about empathy and elder care. It takes us on a little tour of magic and wise-woman traditions in North America, and contains a bit of history, too.

admittedly, it took me more than a few chapters to get into this book, but once I got rolling, it was on. The last line made me cackle, and I look forward to more of what I assume is going to be a series.
