I always feel like witchy books have a lot of potential, and yet, most of the time, they let me down. In VenCo, I also found disappointment. The magic system isn’t explained at all; from what I could gather it’s based off of cultural myths and legends. The storyline meanders around, missing important elements. So, for example, each of the six witches found their spoon. In order for the witch to join the coven, they must find the spoon, and then a witch from the coven comes to bring them to the fold. But for some reason, Lucky has to find the spoon of the seventh witch, and the other witches have to find the seventh witch separately? It doesn’t make a lot of sense. I’m not loving the Jay Christos (reminiscent of Jesus Christ, anyone?) storyline, and I found myself being unimpressed by Lucky’s lazy characterization. Stella was the only halfway decent character in this book. I think this had potential, but it failed to launch.
