The magic system just wasn’t what I was hoping for! I loved the strong female, BIPOC, queer representation and had such high hopes for the plot, but it never really pulled me in. Did a LOT of speedy intros to each character and “told you” more than “showed you” key points. Felt like a chore to get through it.

I read this book based on a TikTok recommendations for books that get you back into reading. It did move quickly. I enjoy a witchy book. Although I liked the characters, I also found them frustrating. The whole scene between Christos and Lucky was super creepy. The compulsion with the flight attendant to make her have sex with him was messed up. I think it was meant to be disturbing? I think the book started getting quite predictable early on. That’s the main reason I didn’t rate the book higher. There were also certain words that rubbed me the wrong way like “hobo” and “dreads”.

Cherie Dimaline is absolutely underrated, I loved this book and I wish I hadn't listened to previous goodreads reviews and put this off so long.
I think what I saw some reviewers complain about *is* necessary to the plot. There needed to be certain roadblocks and also separation between characters in order to accomplish the twists and turns and plot/character movement.
I do love all the wild side characters. 10/10 would want to learn more about them.
There's something in this story and writing that reminds me of Gaiman's American Gods. There's this connection to the world and the traveling that felt both magical and homegrown. There's a grittiness of dirt under your fingernails from the garden, but also the intangible of waking up and not quite remembering your dreams. Does that make sense?
It's an evocative book, some parts had me gasping outloud and getting very emotional. What a journey....
Would recommend!

Not bad, but not good. Enjoyed it, but cannot tell exactly why. Read the whole thing, but would never read again.
