This took me almost two years to read, I just couldn't get into it.

08/25/2010... Finished reading this as the plane was preparing to take off for San Francisco! What a perfect way to start an adventure - in the footsteps of great writers. I felt like Dean repeating over and over again, "can you dig it?" Plus it made my trip to the Beat Museum in North Beach even more special. I connected with the characters and the joys and disappointments of traveling in America, can't wait to read the Dharma Bums.

10/10/2022... Listened to this while finished a car trip to all 48 states in a single year. Actually started it in Iowa which fit in perfectly with the start of his hitchhiking trip out west. I appreciated how unperfect his life on the road was and I felt a bit older listening to it again after 12 years....

I try hard not to project modern sensibilities and beliefs on earlier classics, but it's hard not to read this and think, "wow, they're all kinda misogynistic jerks."
