I read this long enough ago that I had long since intermingled my memories of this and [b:Travels with Charley: In Search of America|5306|Travels with Charley In Search of America|John Steinbeck|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1386924381l/5306._SY75_.jpg|1024827] and probably some other books.
In my head I remembered this to be a more pastoral view of America, where it's really more about people and lifestyle. The impact this book had on our culture had a lot to do with where America was in the early 1950s, and I found more of "historical interest" than "currently interesting"

Okay..I had such high hopes for this book. I mean it was written by the "voice of the beat generation" for Pete's sake. Total disappointment. I didn't like, kept waiting for something to happen. Blechhh! Kerouac - ptooey!
the only reason I give it one star is because it is actually a book and I love books but truly...ew.

Read this because it was a 'classic' that influenced a generation. It probably did but that was 50 years ago. It was OK but took me a couple of holidays to get through. Don't like the characters much - too self absorbed.
Guess the professors in the US in the 60s were contemporararies so felt drawn to the feelings in the book.
