I would keep in mind that this is a true period piece written from a prior generation. It does an incredible job encapsulating the beatnik generation, particularly through Dean, who disregards time and the responsibilities of the late 1950s. I find it so interesting to learn about this period of history (how America was booming) and how this counter culture functioned. Additionally, this book is interesting and very funny!! When they were all in the car naked I was CACKLING. The main character kind of just rides along, so he observes subjects like sexism and abuse, which I see discussed in other reviews, but kind of with the unattached perspective through the entire book. The author was kind of was a shitty dude / father in real life, so you have to read it not expecting to love the main character, but to learn about the beatnik generation and to see this almost love story for the road, life, and America play out.

I picked this up from a school library and DNFd at 100 pages wondering why the hell it was ever allowed in the shelves. Of course book censorship shouldn’t be promoted but neither should the genuinely reprehensible morals preached in On the Road. I can already envision some 15 year old private school trust fund druggie picking it up making it his mantra and becoming the most pretentious cunt you could ever meet. (Carlito Dubon probably)

The scene that truly lost me was when Sal, the protagonist, seduces a young Mexican girl escaping an abusive relationship and plans to travel to New York with her but after realising he has to work to save money for the trip ditches her in the middle of the night after fucking her. Disgusting and also reminiscent of modern day daddy’s money fuckboys who think of themselves as some profound philosophers but don’t really know shit, refuse to work a day in their lives and rely on family money for their ‘insightful’ travels which are more like money laundering if anything.

2nd star for prose which is admittedly pretty good, but even Virginia Woolf’s prose wouldn’t be enough for me to finish such immoral slop

En el camino será biblia beat y lo qué tu quieras pero es la historia de una pandilla de yonkis que se recorren EEUU "buscando la esencia".
Dean Moriarty es un loco insoportable.

It was not to my liking. It did fill me with wanderlust.

It's a mess, but a mad, beautiful, kind of mess.

Erratic, making it hard to get a foot hold
