Short. Leaves something to be desired. Gave backstory, but missing the 'magic' I normally expect.

Short and predictable as you can imagine, this lovely story will make you feel compassion for its main character.

Kate's life will completely change when she meets her oldest neighbour and he tells her the story of his life. The plot doesn't go further than that but Sarah's writing will keep you entertained for like 15 minutes of reading.

No need to read first Lost Lake, if you were wondering.

For everyone reading Lost Lake before reading Waking Kate, DON'T DO THAT!!! Read this e-novella first!!!! It helps a lot with the way that Kate acts and adds to the story. I am glad I read this before I read Lost Lake. I feel like I would have been lost if I hadn't.

I throughly enjoyed this book. I loved the conversation with Mr. Donbeet, he had a wonderful message behind what he is saying. Kate was detailed through her mind as a young child who thinks the world is a magical place.

Overall, good prequel but I don't know if I'll be reading Lost Lake. I haven't decided yet.

A pleasant prequel to [b:Lost Lake|13481275|Lost Lake|Sarah Addison Allen|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1377117167s/13481275.jpg|19014102]. Although it is not essential to read this before that novel, it serves to pique interest in the characters and setting, and probably was a fun tease for fans in advance of the book's release. Allen's charming version of magical realism is on display, and while the story isn't particularly deep or long, it's a nice way to spend a sitting.

It's so easy to be drawn back into the dreamy world of Sarah Addison Allen. I was already aware this was more a foretaste to an upcoming release, and it can stand as an evocative story, but it was still disappointing to discover it's even less substantial than first appears. Am I intrigued? Of course. However, discovering many pages of an already slim volume are actually an excerpt of the next book leaves a slightly bitter tang.

One of those short stories that I don't think really add to the story of the main book. Lost Lake can be read without it.
Pretty pointless IMHO, but easy to read so I am giving it 3 stars.
