The tears are falling and the only song I can think to listen to after finishing this is DNA by Lia Marie Johnson
Not even gonna lie…Bree annoyed me so much in this book. She was not this bad in the first book and I really want to know what is gonna happen with her character in the next book. I know that she’s 16/17 and trying to find her workings with her new life and powers but still – that does not grant her to act like a brat when she doesn’t get her way. I really hope she becomes more mature in the next book because I’m truly invested in this series.
The Order on the other hand also got on my nerves because they were doing too much and I mean way too much for my liking. I was so flustered I would have to take a break just to rant so I could feel better. The passive aggressive racism was insane in this book to tell you the truth which was by far one of the craziest things ever.
I support women’s wrongs so I’m patiently waiting for Bree to go towards the killer side of her power, especially the King Aruthur side because I have a hit list that I need to be fulfill immediately! And when I say the list is long – it is long and Tor is AT THE TOP! THE VERY TOP!
You see I felt kinda bad for how Bree was disrespecting Aruthur for like 80+ percent of the book but once I got to the last part of the book: only a king I in fact was proud of how she treated him because – OMG! That man oh – he’s something alright! I don’t want to spoil it but this book made me hate King Aruthur but like the multiverse I believe this is only one variant of King Aruthur so my love for the legend will not be taken away because of this one book.
ANYWAYS…the Sel moments in this book were great though
– I mean nothing can make me hate Sel. HE’S NUMBER #1 AND LITERALLY SEL! Chapter 52 between him and Bree brought me back to life! It was so amazing reading that it altered my whole rating I wanted to give the book among other things. LOVE LIVE SEL KANE. I am definitely a Sel and Bree shipper – Nick is too much of a “golden retriever” kinda guy for me and not in a good way either.
I would understand if Bree risked her life time and time again for SEL but FOR NICK! SERIOUSLY!?

“I’ve you got. Stay with me. Stay with me, Bree” – GUESS WHO SAID THIS TO BREE!!

“No other Merlin can protect you like I can, because no other Merlin feels about you the way I do. I want you to live, because I want you to be happy. Not because of a spell, but because so very many things would break and go dark if you weren’t in the world. Myself included.”
– Okay I can die happy now!

”And…you’re also the most wondrous being I have ever encountered, will ever encounter. And I believe there is nothing in this world that you cannot do.” – I had to just stare at my wall for a moment after reading this because I was so filled with JOY!

“There’s no comparison. This favor…your aether, your root… I can still taste you.”– I did indeed blush and do a little dancey dance after reading this specific quote!

This was such a step down from Legendborn sadly :(
It was so heavily ya fantasy if you get me. I also HATE the love triangle trope in anything and this one wasn't even very well developed because Nick wasn't even there for most of the book. I also think Bree as a character was infuriatingly self-destructive more so in this book rather as opposed the previous one. I did enjoy the magic system and lore albeit, but the rest of this book was quite a let down, I really wanted to love it as much as I loved Legendborn.

This is such a beautiful series and despite it being fiction, I’m learning a lot. The connections to Black history have sent me down my own little rabbit holes which have been exciting and fun. I can feel Deonn’s cathartic deep breath in these books as she processes and releases ancestral trauma. This book is for Black woman - Black folk in general, but especially us. And I am so, so here for it.
