Beginning to feel like almost every 2nd book of a fantasy series seriously gets lost in the sauce. Had me on a couple fronts though, specifically the Selwyn thread. 3.25, will be immediately moving on to Book 3.

this series is great. i thought this was better than the first one, as this had much better character development due to the fact that we focus on less (first book had the issue of too many cooks spoil the broth). although i did think the pacing was a little off in this one compared to the first. it does suffer from second book syndrome a little in that not much happens but in a good way. like how harry potter and the deathly hallows part 2 film is good. like yasss lets spend 6 chapters at a dive bar. i think this series can still get better so im excited.

The relationships between the core characters are easily one of my favorite parts of this book. Bree and her friends have such a strong bond, and it made the emotional moments hit even harder.
The tension between Bree and the main love interest? So good. The chemistry, the back-and-forth, the angst — it kept me hooked the whole time.
The plot definitely takes a big turn, though, and I’ll be honest — I had a hard time keeping up at certain points. It felt like things moved a little too fast or got a bit confusing without enough explanation.
Also, I wish we got to see more of Bree training and really learning how to use her powers. Her magic and abilities are such a cool part of the story, and I would’ve loved more focus on that development.

I enjoyed this way more than the first! Finally got some more worldbuilding and explanations. Diving deeper into the root community was the best part. I do think this book did the same sort of thing as the first where a LOT of stuff rushed in within the span of 50 pages at the end.
