In my opinion, this book series will one day be considered a staple and a classic for middle grade readers. This book was a mix of every MG book I love. This book wasn't just about a girl finding her brother, it brought in topics of race and overcoming bullying. I cannot wait to get ahold of the next book!

A terrific new voice in MG fantasy! I absolutely loved AMARI AND THE NIGHT BROTHERS and can’t wait to read the next one. The world absolutely jumps off they page; I felt like I was at camp right alongside Amari!

Such a strong debut! If you like MG fantasy and supporting black authors, read this book.

I'll give this book a 3.5 stars. I did enjoy this book, but it let me down sadly.

I'm not the target audience for this book. I know that. However, I am an avid enjoyer of middle grade series. I adore Ranger's Apprentice, Aru Shah, Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, and Keeper of the Lost Cities. I think my issue is I've heard people say this is the book people should read instead of Harry Potter, so I had high expectations. However, it just... fell flat for me. Not in the sense that it's a bad book, but in the sense that it doesn't really breach that divide of being for more than just for MG for me. Can I still enjoy it? Sure. But it reads very much like for a middle grade audience, whereas the books I mentioned earlier feel like they can transcend that because of the way they're written.

It is fast paced, it is very quirky, it is very blunt about its messages, it is... very fun. That is best way to describe it. The book is having fun while delivering its messages. Which I won't fault it for.

I don't know how to talk about this book without just continually going back to saying "it's very middle grade" which is not an insult, just... It sucks because I came into this book with expectations laid out for me that just didn't get met. And it suuuucks. Because that's not the books fault, and I hate when that happens.

Great fun book for kids. I definitely can recommend that. Its a nice, magical ride. I'll definitely be continuing. There were definitely moments I kept wanting to read because of twists and things, and the world was fun and magical. Just... gah, so upsetti what the expectations others gave me did to my final experience T^T

Literally the American, female Harry Potter in all the best ways. I loved this and cannot wait to read the next book in the series!
