A strange, haunting short story depicting the lives of rural Australians. This was a provoking read enforcing the concepts of time, memory and perspective. I found the constant threat of an unknown predator to be a striking metaphor, both literal and figurative, however the “twist” of its nature seemed quite obvious when finally revealed. I found myself quite bored at the beginning, trudging along the bleak narrative, but it quickly grew on me as I traversed the lives of the characters. Ronnie was an immediate stand-out and really brought together this novel for me despite her role within it. The isolating affinity between land and people is greatly emphasised and really adds to the bizarre and near-paranormal phenomena of the story. Definitely not a first pick read, but something that surprised me nonetheless.

Despite an ending that suffered somewhat of 'Stephen King' syndrome, I found this novel to be extremely engaging and shows once again why Winton is one of the great Australian authors.

~ Movie with Miranda ~
Great, GREAT writing, great atmosphere, and quick to read.

a little confusing and creepy… very un-winton-like….
