When a man dreams things from the past, you’d think he’d be able to rearrange them in new sequences to please himself. You’d think your unconscious mind would want to do it for you, to spare you the grief and shame. But no. In my dreams, it all happens as it happened, and I see it and be it again and again and the confusion never wears off.

This is my first encounter with the work of Tim Winton, and whilst I can understand how my fellow readers (including the friend who recommended the author) feel he is a compelling read I must admit I struggled with this book. Though only a slim volume it took several attempts to get through it rather than the quick read I was expecting.
Also the poor cats, cat lovers be warned this book may be a bit dark for you.
I found the ending to be disappointing. I don’t normally need my mysteries to be wrapped up as sweetly as an episode of murder she wrote. But, In the winter dark has an approach to story resolution that makes me feel like Jessica fletcher just got to the “I know who dunnit” and couldn’t be bothered to smugly trap the culprit and tell us how it was done.
Here’s hoping I find my next Winton read more compelling.

An odd one, not entirely sure what I've just read. Very atmospheric but open to interpretation.
