I really preferred this book over Six Of Crows. Although I do realize that Six Of Crows was entirely necessary for the Crooked Kingdoms story and character developments. I think it’s a me thing.. I often prefer sequels when it comes to books. Favorite parts of the book: sneaky teenagers falling in love. Nina’s jokes. Mathias seeing everything differently and kissing Nina. Kaz asserting his shark eyed dominance on his crew. Inej and Kaz protecting each other. Alys’ singing. Firework dust ghosts in a graveyard. Backstory’s galore. Wolf pups. Jespers dad providing the parental love that they all desperately deserved. The inclusion of Zoya, Genya and the legendary Sturmhond pirate~ Privateer. Kaz and Inej holding hands without a leather glove between them.

I enjoyed that the characters (except two) got the endings they deserved, especially Wylan getting the respect and money. And Inej seeing her family. I wish Kaz and Inej could’ve gotten closer. I wish Wylan and Jesper could’ve had many more romantic moments rather than surface level flirting (which was still good but I would’ve enjoyed it going deeper into the romance as it does with Nina and Mathias.) and on that note, I’m really sad that Mathias died. It felt… unfair. Like his character had so many places left to go… and like there were so many outs for him to survive that bullet wound, which just didn’t happen. He simply passed away. It seemed out of place with all that had happened and all the shocking things they had survived.

The only other thing I wish (if Mathias had to die no matter what) is that he be reunited with his wolf in his last short chapter. I imagined that as the cannon anyway. I realize we never read about his wolf dying, but.. something about them being reunited would’ve been beautiful and sad.

I could see another sequel exploring Nina’s new powers, her burying Matthias and how difficult the journey will be for her to save Druuskell from themselves as requested by Mathias. The third book could also take us through Inej’s experience on The Wraith and her relationship with Kaz reaching new heights. Us finding out her family’s reaction to all the things she’s been through. And even Kuwei’s journey to discovering the antidote to Parem. Then even more story is to be unfolded with Wylans mother, and Jesper exploring his powers and possibly traveling to Ravka to train. It would also be cute if Wylan could learn to read just one word, Jespers name.

Overall, great story telling. The twists and turns were great. I love when characters get that win they so desperately deserve. I love happy endings. I received that for almost all of the characters. Rip Matthias <3

Well, I’m off to read the other books from the Grishaverse. Safe to say, I love this universe and I’m fully invested in it.

Holy moly this book is amazing. Second time just as amazing as the first. I may have cried at my place of employment... It happens.

I miss them already. Where did my friends go?

This is my third book by Leigh Bardugo and it’s the third book of hers that has easily become a favorite. I fell in love with these character so much that it was heartbreaking to close the book and leave them. Absolutely recommend, especially to those who love a good thrown together team of misfits and plot-driven storylines.
