It was one of the better in The Lord John series! Would prefer to give 3.5 stars.
Lord John Grey is terrific. Do I like these more than the Outlander series? Possibly...
A mixed bag. Gabaldon is clearly a novelist and not a short-fiction writer, so she's not in the sweet spot here. I'm enjoying this time getting to know Lord John, who's a really great character, but if she doesn't kill off his prissy valet pretty soon....

Oops. I forgot I had a story left to read in this collection of three Lord John stories.
Half the book is taken up by "Lord John and the Haunted Soldier" a story that follows Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade, a novel that I just loved. "Haunted Soldier"... not so much. I dunno, maybe I just wasn't in the mood for all the military intrigue and names that I can't keep track of. Also, I've just come to expect that all of the intrigue will just suddenly resolve itself in the last 4 pages of the story, the end. This story lived up to those expectations. Also, there was a sad lack of hot gay action.
The other two stories, "Lord John and the Hellfire Club" and "Lord John and the Succubus" were more diverting. Each have interesting historical details, although a scene from Lord John and the Succubus is almost straight out of "Interview with the Vampire."

This is a collection of shorter stories. I got through the first and part of the second before I gave up. I don't really think this is a reflection on the book but more just me right now. It's been tough getting in to books for me recently and this unfortunately was one that I've had to sacrifice.
Interesting and relatively quick read if you're a Lord John fan. These novellas come before, during, and after the 2 full-length Lord John mysteries. I recommend getting this version as all 3 are there, and if you've read the 1st 2 novels, these will be good before starting #3.

As usual with short stories the pacing was weird. More happened in the last 10 pages than in the first 100. I'm really glad I read the book that came before this or I would have been very confused.
