I enjoyed this book. Within the first few chapters, I thought I had it all sussed out. And I was pleasantly surprised when it turned out I was completely wrong.
The next book in the series is now on my wish list - and I’m hoping I continue to enjoy!

I did not finish this book because of the slow pace of the unfolding storyline. The plot itself may be interesting but after 30% it failed to hook me up.

Calling all detective fiction lovers! If you love a strong female lead who just happens to be ex-military turned detective, then [b:Little Girls Sleeping|44424465|Little Girls Sleeping (Detective Katie Scott, #1)|Jennifer Chase|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1552505257s/44424465.jpg|68980355] by [a:Jennifer Chase|2780337|Jennifer Chase|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1385243358p2/2780337.jpg] is going to be a book you will have to read.
What it's about: Katie Scott has just come back from Afghanistan and is ready to decompress and figure out what her next steps will be. Before the army, she spent two years as a Sacramento PD patrol cop, so when her uncle who is the sheriff of Pine Valley her childhood home, asks her to help out at his office doing clerical work, she doesn't refuse. She soon finds herself sworn in as a detective after finding a killer's graveyard containing 2 little girls buried in caskets holding teddy bears. She manages to tie these girls to other missing-person's cases and realizes someone has been kidnapping the little girls of Pine Valley for some time. Then another little girl is snatched, and Katie is determined to find the killer, if she can get to him before he kills her . . .
I feel like I was led a bit astray with this book being described as 'compulsive and gripping crime fiction.' While the storyline is certainly interesting and it is definitely crime fiction, I'm not sure I would describe this as gripping, or as having a 'gasping with shock' conclusion. I wasn't really surprised by too much that happened, but I do think Chase did an excellent job throwing suspicion on multiple characters. While some people will be blow away, I just wasn't there, and I thought the ending dragged a bit. Although… the ending did have one quite shocking part that I was not expecting in the slightest.
There is definitely plenty to love about Little Girls Sleeping though! It is a very fast read and it didn't even take me 4 hours to read it. Katie is also a very strong female lead, and I loved her sarcasm and dedication. She has some PTSD from being in the army, and I think the author did an excellent job of making that real and palpable in this book. Katie is a character that you just want to love, along with her dog Cisco. I'm not personally a huge fan of German Shepherd's but they are very smart, and I loved the bond between human and dog in this novel.
Final Thought: Little Girls Sleeping is detective fiction to the max, not to mention the chilling plot with these little girls buried with teddy bears. I just wish it would have been a bit more suspenseful then it turned out, but this is a solid book that many people will enjoy. I would consider this a bit of a slow burn as well, and not necessarily super fast-paced even though it was a quick read for sure and there was lots going on especially as we get further in. I am definitely interested in reading more from this author and of course, more about Detective Katie Scott! I can't wait to see how her story continues.
Thank you to the publisher for providing me with an advance review copy of this book via NetGalley, all opinions are my own.

Little Girls Sleeping is the first book in a new series featuring Detective Katie Scott. Katie has just returned from military service and has a decision to make as to whether she returns to Sacramento PD – in the meantime her Uncle Wayne (aka Sheriff Scott) gets her working in his Pine Valley office within the records department. This is a welcome distraction for Katie as she adjusts to civilian life.
Whilst in her Uncle’s office, Katie finds a cold case file on his desk relating to the disappearance of a young girl 4 years ago which pricks her interest due to something from her childhood – what follows is Katie’s own investigation into the girl’s last known movements in order to find her and give her parents some answers. Due to Katie’s military training, and her wonderful canine partner Cisco, Katie has fantastic attention to detail and very much trusts her instincts and cues from Cisco. They are very methodical in their searches and this puts them in danger as someone clearly doesn’t want her finding out what happened to Chelsea, and will go to any lengths to stop the truth coming out.
Little Girls Sleeping is a great start to this series, introducing us to Katie, her family and her new colleagues. I really liked seeing the professional relationship build between Katie and Deputy McGaven (who was begrudging placed with Katie when the investigation is taken back over by the Sheriff’s office). Katie faces a lot of scrutiny and criticism due to her being handed a ‘detective’ title for this investigation so she really needs someone on her side.
Whilst the book is mostly told from Katie’s perspective, we do also hear snippets from the killer to understand why he is taking little girls. I would’ve liked to have heard more from the killer, to really understand the drivers behind the killings just to get inside his head a little more. That said, the reader is given some little nuggets of information about him and a number of suspects who could possibly fit the bill. As such, the author creates a number of possible suspects and red herrings – just as a good police procedural should do!
Jennifer Chase has an extensive background in forensics and criminology which definitely gives this book authenticity and realism!
I enjoyed Little Girls Sleeping and look forward to the next book in the series.

Oh I do love finding a new series and this looks like it’s going to be a belter. Katie Scott comes home from the army and takes a mundane job in admin in the local sheriffs department until she decides what to do with the rest of her life. Soon she’s thrown into the thick of it with life threatening consequences
Brilliant read. I’m looking forward to the next instalment of what Katie (and her German Shepherd Cisco) did next!!
