This book was engrossing from start to finish and I wasn’t bored at all for the duration of its lengthy 700+ pages. But I still feel like they may have been a bit too ambitious on this one. Previous Pendergast adventures have been very localized and this one is truly global, while the plot has started to incorporate overarching storylines that are weaving between novels. All those moving parts just makes it feel a bit disconnected at times.
Pendergast is still a loveable but cold badass and some familiar faces pop up throughout. The storytelling and language is easy to pick up and digest, and it’s a fun little bit of escapism every time you pick up one of these books.
Overall, I really enjoyed Brimstone and will continue to work my way through the Pendergastverse, but this was one of my least favorites in the series so far.

Not one of my favorite Preston books but still an enjoyable read with a lot of suspense. The part I really enjoy about these books are the supernatural elements that turn out to have a logical explanation at the end.

I enjoyed this book a lot. I started reading it during Halloween week, and the subject matter seemed appropriate. Beyond the horror or thriller aspects of the story, however, there are some very interesting characters that I'd like to see in action again. Special agent Pendergast is mysterious and always keeps his cool. He seems a bit more like Lord Peter Wimsey than Sherlock Holmes. He has an assistant and is driven around town in a Rolls-Royce. Sargent D'Agosta is a great contrast to him, a very experienced policeman who tried his hand at writing for a while. While the mystery of the killings in this story is revealed, lots of other questions are raised about the protagonists, and how they came to be. I will definitely read more books in this series.
