This book cemented Ibsen as my favourite playwright after having read Doll's House for school last year. I really enjoyed it and thought it had interesting philosophical undertones but was also just a good read on the surface.

Why yes, I am reading my way through a bunch of the plays Eva Le Gallienne produced at the Civic Rep in the 1920's.

I HAVE SO MANY CONFLICTING FEELINGS ABOUT THIS PLAY. MY GOD. On the one hand, I think Solness is a predatory creep (and I don't know if Ibsen thought he was, which is UNCOMFORTABLE*), and it's also uncomfortable how much Hilde idealizes him (and definitely has shades of that "young woman inexplicably very attracted to a man 30 years older than she is" thing that old male writers like to do). But then, Hilde definitely gets her revenge on Solness? Although she doesn't conceptualize it that way? But she's definitely pretty okay with the outcome? I DON'T EVEN KNOW. WHAT DID I JUST READ. HOW IS IT DOING THIS TO ME.

*I was super weirded out by the quoted Ibsen remarks in the intro about Solness being somewhat autobiographical. After doing a little more research, I feel slightly better because Ibsen was much less of a creep than Solness. Way to undersell yourself, Ibsen.

I don't think I have fully digested it. What an odd little play.

I think this is one where knowing the culture surrounding it would probably help a lot. I didn't understand the danger until the ending scenes, as I was picturing a tower in a castle and not the one of which they spoke. It would be an interesting one to see acted on stage.

Self-delusion, fear of disappointing others, and warnings about neglecting your duties? Good, but not quite powerful.

I want to start a grouping in my head: Pieces of art/stories created to somehow justify a person having marital affairs. I'll need to give this brain group a snappier name. This play will be in that group. So will Tarkovsky's The Sacrifice. I'm on the lookout for more.
I also want a group called "Stories in which narrators believe they have magical powers". Again this play will be in it, and Birdman, maybe that Irish movie "In America", Like Water for Chocolate... come to think of it there's a story where Jung scared Freud by supposedly shooting books of of shelves with the power of his agitated mind....
