My favorite of the first three volumes, for the same reasons it's my 8yo's least favorite: lots of character building, great dialog, and world setup. Not so much with the costumes and fight scenes.
We both love the sight gags and Adrian Alphona's art.

A YA comic aptly showing that the grass isn’t necessarily greener, and definitely be careful of what you wish for.

Young Kamala is often stifled by her family’s strict rules but when her wish to help others is granted by the infamous Captain Marvel, of course being a superhero isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be.

Good themes and good message for all teens and points for showing female strength with plenty of growing pains!

This is my first marvel comic to ever read and I loved it! Since the Ms. Marvel tv show is set to come out who knows when I decided to try to read the story. Thought next time I chose what comic to read I want to make sure it is short but knowing marvel Kamala’s character could die so many times and be resurrected who know how many more times. I loved this opening to the characters though and can’t wait to see her on screen!

Reading more comics and graphic novels has been a goal of mine for quite some time, after seeing (and enjoying) Avengers: Age of Ultron, I decided perhaps it was time to check out some Marvel comics. Of course the next question became, “Umm...where do I start?”. My inner (well, outer) feminist lead me to the new Marvel Now! incarnation of Ms. Marvel. A series about a young woman, written by a woman, that is critically acclaimed? Sign me up! So without further ado, here is my review of Ms. Marvel Vol. 1: No Normal and Ms. Marvel Vol. 2: Generation Why, by G. Willow Wilson.

This series is so much fun! Kamala Khan is a wonderful protagonist. She is funny and nerdy, and learning to embrace herself and her newfound powers. She is working to balance her many worlds: daughter, muslim, teenager, superhero, and it a joy to read as she tackles the issues surrounding each of her roles. The art is lovely, colorful and bright, and feels perfectly suited to the character of Kamala. From references to video games, to cameos of other well known Marvel characters, there are so many little things to enjoy within each issue.

Perhaps the big bad wasn’t too frightening, but I wouldn’t want it to be in these first few issues. Kamala is just learning about her powers, there is plenty of time for her to tackle bigger, badder villains.

These first two volumes did a great job of introducing us to Kamala and her powers, while also setting up plenty of story fodder for future issues. As a new comic reader, I found these volumes to be very easy to dive into and digest. I cannot wait to pick up Volume 3 and read more about this new Ms. Marvel, and to see what she will accomplish next.

~ Fun Origin Story! ~

I try to spice up my reading with comics, and with the Ms. Marvel show coming out, I decided it was the perfect time to read some of the comics!!

The story was great, the art is really vibrant and engaging, and I love Kamala as a character so a fun read!!

Definitely recommend this one if you need a fun comic to read that doesn’t really need prior marvel knowledge!

Kamala Khan is your average Muslim girl living in Jersey City. She doesn’t quite fit in because she doesn’t have blonde hair, has way overprotective parents, and eats weird food. You know just your average Muslim teenager trying to stay true to her heritage while trying to fit in. In a fit of rebellion against her parents she sneaks out to go to a party and this weird fog over takes everything and suddenly Kamala has superpowers. But how is she supposed to control them, and what exactly can she do, and why? What should she do with her new powers?

I love that they made not just a Muslim into a superhero, but a Muslim girl. What more says girl power than that? I like this storyline a lot better than most graphic novels, I tend to read them for the information about the characters and feel disappointed without a great storyline. This story has depth, and is something that a lot of immigrants can probably relate to (I’m just you’re average American girl so I can’t say that first hand). Learning how to bring your family’s culture to a new world where everyone thinks you’re weird because you’re different, but that difference is an integral part of you throw superpowers on top of that, and the fact that you’re just a teenager trying to save your small part of the world. The one thing I wasn’t a big fan of with this graphic novel is the drawing, it’s just a style I don’t like and found it to be kind of distracting.
