short but well-written, the style is captivating and makes the tension feel very real. a creative story for sure and general zaroff is an interesting antagonist. an exciting and tense read, but it's not my favourite thing i've ever read. still very good!

Considering this is around 90 years old, it feels reasonably fresh. The premise is familiar, a cat and mouse game of deadly proportions.
Considering this is a very short story, it is paced well and packs a lot in. There’s even the odd lull such as the first day in the palace, and this changing tempo before the chases heightens their rapidity.
The strength of this story comes from General Zaria, the antagonist. He is chilling, charismatic, gentlemanly, cunning… He is the archetype of a Bond villain. And his face off with Sanger and testing their hunting skills against one another is likeable to the battle of wits between Sherlock and Moriarty, albeit at a smaller scale.
Despite the short length, the descriptions are vibrant, pace punchy, and it is a chilling and well plotted story. The ending can only be one thing, so it is predictable but very satisfying to reach it. As it only takes an hour to read, I would really recommend it.

I read this in high school and it intrigued and traumatized me. Good writing.
