OMG, plotlines are definitely winding down. (I know the last book did it too, but this was at one point a Jordan; he could have introduced an entirely new arc and I wouldn't have been terribly surprised, death or no death.) And he doesn't leave everything hanging until the last book - I sort of thought some things were going to be left, but, nope, that whole thing happened. (Look at me, avoiding a spoiler.)

Anyway. Plenty of Mat, lots of Perrin (less mopey, thank goodness). Rand is also not moping around, which I still find nice. More Min than we've seen in a while, very little Aviendha. I don't know if this glossary was more useless than usual, but it certainly didn't contain anything I wanted to look up, *sigh*.

Overall worthwhile. One star was dinged because OMG, the marriages. Mild spoiler:
SpoilerIt seemed like just about everyone who wasn't already married, and has so much as looked at a member of the opposite sex got married in this book. Objectively I know that's not true, but it sure felt like it. Maybe it's because I'm currently surrounded, but I really felt like Sanderson was getting awfully Mormon. Which I didn't care for.

There's still a lot to resolve, but I am cautiously optimistic the last book will do the series justice.

Updated review:

Apparently the first time around I didn't like this book as much as The Gathering Storm. Despite this, Sanderson improved greatly in his writing. Mat's voice was much better. Not perfect, but a huge improvement. And the Tower of Genjei!! Perfect. Showcased all of Mat's awesomeness. Aviendha going through the columns was so powerful. I wish Sanderson could tell us who Nakomi is. Great setup for the final novel. Everyone is in place and the Last Battle is about to begin!!

Original review:
Not as good as The Gathering Storm in my opinion. Much slower, but still ended up being pretty awesome.

There really can't be enough praise heaped on Brandon Sanderson for what he did in finishing the wheel of time. Obviously he had the notes, some finished scenes, clearly a lot of detailed outlines, and most important the help of RJ's wife and editor, Harriet McDougal.

These books are rollercoasters, joyous and exciting, and all the characters feel so true to themselves, to their characterization through the series. (Well I think he gets a bit goofy with Mat, but it's hard to blame him - hard not to get carried away writing such a delightful goofball).

On to the final volume (until I go back to read the prequel), and on to completing my reread of my beloved Wheel of Time.

Ah, what to say? I would make this a 4.5 stars if I could, but since I can't I opted for the higher score. I am just so pleased to once again love the WoT books. Brandon Sanderson has really brought them back for me, which is saying quite a bit since I'd begun to lose all hope after a string of bad, bloated ones.

I'm not going to say much because I worry about spoilers, but suffice it to say that some characters who I'd been annoyed with at times are redeemed here, and others whose purpose I didn't quite get before also shine.

I'm looking forward to the next installment, after this very satisfying book.

Much better than the last 8-9 I've read/listened to.
