The best book I’ve read this year. I love the detail and the personalities. This is an era of history, or at least of Russian history that I really don’t know a lot about. I recently went to Cambodia and so I have recent memories from learning about what happened there similarly (and differently) in an effort to convert to a more communist or socialist state. This fiction was of course a very small window into it but it still touched upon several of aspects that I hadn’t considered before. I’m looking forward to reading more Russian literature and Russian/Soviet history soon.

Amazing. Not 100% into the ending and slightly too long.

A perfect character driven novel.

Count Alexander Rostov is a Russian aristocrat. After the Russian revolution in the early 1900s, he’s sentenced to live indefinitely in the Hotel Metropol under house arrest and under the inscrutable eyes of the KGB.

On the surface, not a huge amount happens in terms of the plot. Yet the nuances of this tale are fascinating and heart warming. Outwardly, you would think that the Count’s world is incredibly small, being confined to the inside of a hotel, yet Towles does a splendid job of showing that this location is a busy intersection for so many people. The Count finds friendship, love and even family within the confines of the Metropol.

The Count himself I found irresistible. A true gentleman in every sense of the word, I adored his mannerisms and outlook on life.

I loved this novel. Definitely one I would recommend if you’re looking for a heart-warming read.

gave me Grand Budapest hotel vibes with the characters and humor! lots of this book had me smiling but I also found myself wishing there was more to tie me to the story. if it wasn’t for some of the beautiful writing or the sheer likability of the main character, I probably would not have finished. 3 stars.
