A fun horror story with some great creepy moments and a romance subplot that was pretty cute.

I didn't read too many boarding school stories as a child, but even so, there's a real nostalgic style to this book that was surprisingly cosy given the storyline nonetheless. The dialogue is kind of cliche, but it's cute and fun and again, gave the book a sense of nostalgia somehow - for me, at least!

I haven't read too many retellings of the Bloody Mary story, but I've heard a few - who hasn't, I guess? - and I enjoyed the framing of the story as a bit of a school legend that grew around a tragic disappearance. The characters are loveable, again, if a bit cliche, and seeing the story go from a group of giggling teenagers trying to show off a bit on Hallowe'en to staving off horrors beyond their comprehension was suitably hard to watch at times.

As the countdown given by Bloody Mary goes down, the characters begin piecing together her story through dreams from her perspective, giving them an insight into her troubled time at school and the horrible circumstances of her death. She becomes, at least in Bobbie's eyes, a much more sympathetic figure: although whether or not that's 100% true is left a little bit open to interpretation.

Definitely worth the read if you want something quick and a bit scary.
The moral of the story is probably that the real horror is the nonce we met along the way, but ghosts aren't the most fun to be around, either.
