Although it was tied up well at the end, I struggled a lot with this one.  The 3 leads were split, and they were each in a different part of the world with its own cast of characters.  Three Pines and its denizens do not play a large part. I found it very difficult to keep the plot lines and the characters straight. This was exaggerated by my initial attempt to listen to the book—it was easier to follow on paper. I do not love the “Gamache saves the world” stories as much as I do the smaller more personal ones, so this installment was not a hit for me.
medium-paced

Enjoyable in a way but disjointed and over the top. While the risk of domestic terrorism cannot be dismissed out of hand, plot elements and clues never fully come together. The book strains under the weight of far-fetched conspiracies and one-dimensional villains.  I would have much preferred a more human-scaled mystery that maintained the charm of the series.
