This is the first western I’ve read, and I really enjoyed it. It was surprisingly funny and also quite reflective. I’m definitely going to check out more work by Larry McMurtry.

I don’t think I could ever write a review for this book that would truly reflect my feelings or thoughts. 
It’s a rare thing to find a world so alive and characters so real. 
I have carried this story with me over the last week or so and m devastated to have reached its end. I went to bed last night dreaming of this book and I doubt it will be the last time I do. 
I want to recommend it to everyone and at the same time I’m possessive of this story. There are no words I can say to do justice to this book.

I wouldnt have thought a western would appeal to me but I really enjoyed this book. Takes a while to get going but you get to know a great cast of characters. Good balance of lighthearted and heavy moments

I knew this book was going to be good but I was absolutely blown away. The characters were so well written I’ve never read anything like it. The dialogue was so natural and real. The emotional trajectory of this novel was devastating but I’m so glad I took the journey. The only thing I didn’t like was the July/Elmira subplot. I found these sections pretty boring and was often speeding through them to get back to the Hat Creek Outfit.
