Almost all redeeming qualities of this book (and I'll admit there are some) were ruined for me by how much I hated the ending. I see why this is such a popular book-- I stayed up well past my bedtime reading, and for a book clocking over 800 pages, I was rarely bored. It's true there is a lot of beauty in McMurty's wild west. And a lot of racism, misogyny, and fascistic idealism... It's a genre flaw I can't get past. Overall, this one just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Rarely do I reread a book, but I 1st read Lonesome Dove, by Larry McMurtry when it came out in 1985 or so. Forty years later, I finished Lonesome Dove again and now I have a MAJOR book hangover and nothing else seems worth reading by comparison. If you love cowboys, cattle drives, bulls, bears, broncs, “working”girls, scalping, bar brawls, cattle rustling, gun fights - in essence the making of the American West, run don’t walk to get this Pulitzer Prize winning novel.

Just an epic American west adventure. Some of the best character building I’ve ever experienced. A long book but I never grew tired of it and instead was always intrigued by what would happen next. A must read for any western fans.
