I didn’t think I’d be into a western book, especially one this thick, but the characters pulled me right in every time I cracked it open.  You grow to like them and their journey. This book has a lot of heart and put me in a reflective mood, especially once I finished it.

A lot of the racist shit was hard to read. And there’s too much damn focus on men wanting a “poke” and most of the women just having to deal with it. I would’ve titled this Lonesome Poke.

Coming back on the reflection part. Sometimes I think, Why do I even write these reviews? My one and only friend/bully on here doesn’t even read them or like them. And when I ask her to look she just sends me a thumbs down emoji.

I liked it, but expected to like it more. Don't get me wrong. Towards the end I couldn't put the book down. I was laughing and gasping and sighing sentimentally. I left this book thinking about the characters and having thoroughly enjoyed this long book about their long journey.

The main thing I didn't like was the amount of sex? whoring? etc? I know it's historically accurate and part of the story McMurty is telling, I just personally didn't like it very much. It can feel tiring to only have female characters who are objects of desire or abuse or both at once. Even Clara (pretty much the only woman who hasn't explicitly experienced sexual assault) is always having to deal with some man who loves her from afar. Discussions about the very real experiences of many women are not a bad thing, but in my experience being a young woman, I get tired and sad of reading about it sometimes.

Now that I've mentioned that, let me tell you about what I liked! The characters were wonderful and fun and weird (in the way that people are). They went on an epic journey! They met people from all over! They fought and struggled and died and grew and made better lives!

All this to say: If you choose to read this book, enjoy! But be warned, people will die and hurt and you will feel so sad for them. :( Such is life in the West!
