What a journey! This book sucked me in right from page one. The humor, the romance, the human flaws, the fears, the bravado, the desperation, and the hopes... all of it accumulated to make this masterpiece. Each character felt so distinct and they had a whole world of their own. No one felt like a side character (not even the Texas bull or the pigs), although there were 10-15 characters with story-lines.

Spoiler
1. Janey's death was the saddest and most real. But I am glad there was no plot armor there.
2. Roscoe's parts were sad and hilarious at the same time.
3. Deets' death felt the most contrived. I just cannot expect Deets to be so savvy and yet so foolish to hold the Indian kid, thinking that the Indians will understand that gesture right after getting a big scare.
4. The aftermath of Gus's death from Call's perspective was cathartic. That Hat Creek Outfit signboard as a gravestone thing got me hard.
5. The flaws of Call were relatable. The doubts he had were relatable.
6. I despised Elmira, but I still enjoyed reading about her. The random shot in the woods was quite curious.
7. I am glad that there weren't as many deaths as I had expected (I had thought that there would be one Hat Creek guy dying every 50 pages or so). And them getting to Montana was a big surprise as well.
8. Wilbarger's character was surprisingly pleasant. I thought he might turn out to be a bad guy but I appreciated his parts more and more. The Latin sentence discourse was humorous.
9. Jake Spoon should have been let to live.
10. Newt + Clara's daughters were great and sincere characters. In fact, I could relate to Clara's character a lot. I appreciate the author for writing about a strong female character.
11. Po Campo, Dish, Needle, Irishmen, Soupy, Jasper; all of them had some distinct personalities, and all of those blended so well.
12. July Johnson, with all his flaws, tried his darnest; that too was relatable.

This book got in my hall of fame pretty soon, around 50 pages. I LOVED the humor in it. The way people talked, the way people interacted; such good writing. The world felt alive, there were things happening everywhere and it was not just around the main character. At no point I was annoyed with any character's chapters/parts. I enjoyed each page equally and was dreading the book ending.

This book is so well loved and I thought I was gonna love it too. However I have to conclude that I didn’t, I liked it but didn’t love it. I thought the story and characters were interesting although I feel like all personalities fell flat for me. I don’t think I particularly cared for ANY of them. The writing style didn’t allow for me to connect with any of them. Also, what the hell was that ending? It was so abrupt. I do have to admit that I am a bit curious what the sequel is about though… maybe I’ll pick it up someday.

Wow, hands down the best book I’ve ever read. The way the characters are introduced and brought into the story really made you connect with them. Gus and Call are probably the two most memorable and fun characters to read about. Gus especially. I loved the highs and lows of this book and really didn’t want the story to end. I would recommend this book to anyone, no matter the genre of books your into, this one is a must read.

This is the best novel I've ever read in my life. I picked it up from a second-hand bookshop on a whim, not even sure why I wanted to read a novel about cowboys in the first place. Lonesome Dove is so much more than a western.

Larry McMurtry understands human nature, he understands people, and I have never before read a novel where every character feels so alive. I couldn't put this novel down, although towards the end I was reading so slowly, rereading pages over and over, trying to prolong the experience as long as I could. And when I finished, I couldn't pick up another book for a month because nothing was good enough.

I fucking hated this. That was so unsatisfying but also I understand why it was an awards darling and is known as one of the Great American Novels. God I fucking hate men 😩😩😩

Also this is racist as fuckkkkkkkkkkkk. Look, I know it's a Western and so being weird about Native people is practically a requirement but good fucking lord. And then the fucking racist trope used was misogynistic as well. I mean sure, I'll say that the character work is excellent......... for the WHITE characters, otherwise it's just racist caricature after caricature. I guess.... props for writing the women as complex and like real people, but then we were subjected to male POV after male POV of men just being fucking awful to them.  Anyway.... I expected it going in, so I'm not exactly surprised, but I'm still mad about it.

This entire story was pointless actually. I hope that was the intended message of the author but god did it make for a miserable read.
