miranda was annoying and pretentious so i found her parts boring, especially when she talked about her past. i wanted to hear more about her as a person rather than her obsession with this old misogynistic man. i found her more likable through the eyes of frederick (bc duh) but once it got to her pov it was dragging. like i get it and the whole unreliable authors but i’d rather be disgusted picking through frederick’s creepy demented brain than getting tired of hers… i feel like it’s wrong to say that but i fear that is what i feel ✋😔
Very unsettling and incredibly well written, and that's just on face value. Fowles' take on the then-new post-war middle class is especially insightful. Definite re-read.

I initially found out about this book from a YouTuber (Dakota Warren) whose taste in books is eerily similar to mine, so I had a feeling this book would be good right off the bat. I love books with characters who are wholly morally abhorrent, and who do things that no sane person could even conjure up. This book was the epitome of that. Fowles' writing had me completely engrossed in the story to the point where I was unable to hide my reactions to the text even while reading in public. That's how you know it's a good book. There were parts I was less interested in than others, but I read the last half of the book in one sitting, so those parts didn't get in the way! Miranda's fate broke my heart and had me closing the book after finishing it with a pain in my chest.
