expected a happy ending and didn't get it, but i guess that makes this book even better, creepier. Knowing he will strike again...

The first half was intriguing, but the second half, which was narrated from the girl's perspective, took something away from the book, I thought.

I'd say this book is one of the most disturbing books I've ever read. Among all sections of the book, I really enjoyed reading the main character's diary entries, at times I was so surprised by how she is so emotionally mature even in such horrid conditions.
I also liked hers and G.P.'s take on New People, them remarking about how this new breed of people are experiencing a poverty of soul. Overall, her social commentary was acutely accurate and paralleled most of my thinking too.
The ending, though, left me fuming with anger and in utter shock. In the end, I hoped that Frederick would turn in to the police, alas his mind has gone beyond repair and, now he is yet again in search of a new specimen for his collection

I can understand the appeal if you read the synopsis. But, I can’t understand why this is considered to be even ‘somewhat’ of a classic. She gets kidnapped in the first 20 pages and the only thing keeping you going while reading is to find out what the main character keeps alluding to. I couldn’t do it anymore 😭

An entertaining psychological thriller, told by both the abductor, and the abductee. The former part is excellent, really getting into his head and his obsession. The latter is not as successful, Miranda's musings on class and relationships are fine in themselves, but dilute the tension. Fortunately these diversions lessen as we reach the conclusion, and a particularly chilling conclusion it is.
The first chapter had me thinking of Lolita. A (possible) unreliable narrator telling the reader directly about his obsession with a young girl/woman. Although, in Lolita, the narrator is very obviously unreliable which brings some humour into the story. The Collector on the other hand has no such humour. The narrator is dim witted and seems incapable of lying too much.
The second chapter switches to Miranda's POV, some of which is very interesting. However, I thought the sections about her discussing her former trivial romantic issues were boring and unnecessary.
I won't describe the last two chapters.
Overall, a very engaging read, some really good ideas about art and society, and well-written characters.
