A slow, contemplative comic. There's no surprises, no reveal, we know where it's going from the start and it gets there.
The mother's words to her daughter make a deeply moving scene. The potted history of two surfing pioneers is interesting enough. The drawings are good, but fall down at times. The production is in that Nobrow style that seems somehow condescending, like it's printed in an ivory tower.
It's nice, the story is good, but it seems to try too hard to be comic book poetry. I'm not sure how well the illustration style lends itself to sequential art. But I don't want to be harsh, it's obviously a book made with tenderness and pain.
