Three and a half stars

Marginally better than Sword (and definitely better written), but not as good as Elfstones. This feels like a step backwards when it comes to being derivative of Tolkien: we have a Council of Rivendell, a Gollum, and Gandalf vs the Balrog fight, and an evil inanimate object (among other things).

And yet...the Ohmsfords are well characterized and unique, and Brooks writes them in a way that gives the conclusion some real punch. Add to that my continued nostalgia for the series, and I can’t help but want to recommend it, but with reservations.

Some interesting characters and ideas but I found a lot of it hugely frustrating. The protagonist started to grate on me partway through and I struggled with that.

A little bit about this book:

➔The plot is original, and we all know that Brooks didn't know the meaning of the word in his first two Shannara books, so this was a much-needed change.
We follow Brin and Jair, Wil and Eretria's children.
Yes, Allanon will appear yet again
SpoilerFor the last time because he dies in this one and it wasn't even sad; probably because I didn't bond with him in the first two books

Still needed more editing. Last of the Shannara books i bought and definitely the last I'll read.

This was a carbon copy of his previous two novels. Some of the same characters, or their children and the same evil darkness threatening the world. Technology never advances, nothing ever changes and this book was a brutal chore to finish. Time moves very quickly in the book, but I wish that would translate to real life. Two stars means I thought it was OK. This book was very OK...

I really enjoyed the story and the devolpment of the different magic than what we have seen in the 2 book previous. I also very much like how Terry Brooks takes the story from one generation to the next and all the different and creative characters he has created. They are all so beautifully written.
