I’m going to be honest: I didn’t enjoy this book as much as I was expecting and hoping to. Going into it, I knew almost nothing about it beyond that it was a coming-of-age novel taking place at an English family’s summer home, and I had the impression that it might be similar to We Were Liars, The Divines, and Last Summer at the Golden Hotel, all of which I adored. I don’t know what gave me that impression other than that it was British and involved a family at a summer home.

There were some ingredients in this book that I loved: the somewhat omniscient narrator who was an actual, but unnamed character in the story, so that we know nothing about them beyond their relationships with other characters; the manipulative character who everyone - including the narrator who knew they were being manipulated - fell for; the fact that it was a somewhat dark and mysterious coming-of-age novel.

Unfortunately though, the book fell somewhat flat for me, to the point that I found that I was having to force myself to finish it. The narrator was presented as almost entirely emotionless - they had no apparent feelings for any character other than Kit, and were downright dismissive of and hateful towards their sister Maddie in particular. Very little seemed to happen throughout parts of the book, and then other sections were rushed.

Ultimately, I stuck it out because I knew the ending was going to be a twist and was hoping for something good. Instead, it was mildly predictable and - even if the author didn’t intend for it to be - somewhat problematic (I don’t want to explain specifically because it would give away the ending for people who might still want to read it).

DNF - immature writing style and too many theatre-y, Hollywood types for my taste.
