(i’m torn between a 4.5 and 4.75 aaa idk)
this was a really good sequel. in fact, i liked it more than the first one.
the story is taken in interesting directions, and many things about the world starts to make more sense (and get more interesting) with a series of new revelations.
and the characters! in the first book and the beginning of this one i was kinda like “there are too many characters i don’t actually care about most of these people” but many of them had more page time here and saw some interesting development.
and many of them really grew on me, including wyatt, who partly went through some good character growth that further endeared him to me, and partly just wore me down with his continuous dumbassery (affectionate)

this duology is so messy. like
purposefully. the characters are assholes at parts. in this one tho Wyatt (the mc) was called out on his bullshit a lot more which was nice honestly. this book had the potential to be a really long drawn out series with multiple conflicts with the gov of fantasy worlds, but it was fit into just two books and honestly that was kind of refreshing. sometimes reading those long series can just be tiring and kind of exhausting. It was nice to have everything wrapped up at the end of just two books and I didn't feel like any more time was needed to say what was said

this author really understands how you can use fantasy to explore ideas and envision a new world. I enjoyed the world that is created by this author and also the character's drive to create a better world. I also loved the use of many different pronouns. I find the recurring soul mate theme slightly difficult/unexamined but hopefully the author will have another book in this series that can broaden that idea.
