This story of a young girl's life strikes immediate attention as extremely powerful. The traumatic journey through several foster homes opens up reality that many of us never witness let alone experience. The continuing surprises in the plot line depicts life in a perspective that opens insight to the unfathomable. Janet Fitch writes without cliches putting forth deep enrichment that is life altering and unforgettable. The dichotomy of good vs. evil is branded in my mind, therefore, interlaced in my conscious to be a better person. White Oleander is absolutely remarkable and truly inspiring.

Beautiful, well written book. Not a fan of the ending at all though, which is why I rated it the way I did.

One of my favorite books ever. A coming of age tale every foster kid needs to read. I love Janet Fitch's writing; she is a true California girl and a master of description. If you miss Southern California then reading this book will be a welcome balm for your sadness. Miss Fitch teaches as well as writes, and I recommend her books to anyone who wants to be a great writer. There's so much I could say here but read this one for yourself. If you're skeptical perhaps the fact that it was an Oprah selection will influence you. This was my second time around reading it.
