Very very very freaking good. The writing is absolutely beautiful—a lot of good quotes that I wrote down and allowed me to imagine the scenery as she wanted us to. Her language set the tone for each foster mom that Astrid was with. There’s a lot of crazy stuff that happens but a lot of positive things that you can take from those atrocious situations and people. Claire was probably my favorite—she taught Astrid how to be loved and she made me understand a perspective that I sadly always considered as weak. Though I would feel the need to protect, I think everyone deserves a fully pure hearted friend or person in their life and truly, deeply hope that those who feel a deep void can hold hope that it will be filled with love and the person they choose will treasure and love them back, like Astrid did to her (definitely definitely definitely not how Ron did). Now moving onto the actual rating, I give this 4 stars and not 5 because of the ending and because of Ingrid. I absolutely hate Ingrid (although I’m happy she gave Astrid what she needed to hear in the end) but she’s a horrible mother nonetheless. This book made me appreciate a lot of things, especially my mom a lot more. I treasure the deep and meaningful moments of daily life and the wonderful people that surround me.
I have a bad habit of skipping what I consider unimportant description in books. I read every single word in this book. It was lyrical. The story is melancholy but the characters are real and I couldn't put the book down.

The plot was engaging, and a good deal of the writing was beautiful. One thing that didn’t make a lot of sense to me was Astrid’s refusal to choose and easy life, resulting in her continued complaints about a difficult life. Why would she choose further trauma? Maybe this is a naïve thought. The character of Ingrid (her mother) was interesting, and scratched an itch for me.
