Listened to the audiobook and it bothered me a lot that Ben Whishaw mispronounced Maurice every single time. It's not Morris, Mr Whishaw.

For any gay male who loves romantic classics such as "little women" or "pride and prejudice" this novel is for you! A must, in my opinion! My new favorite.

I'm reading this for a book report and GOLLYGEE is my ELA teacher going to have a storm coming their way!

This was SO GOOD! If you read my other reviews you will see that a long, but this was particularly incredible.

First of all, I really love E.M Forster's writing style. It's simple and easy to understand, but it paints these beautiful scenes and makes the emotional dialogue and moments really shine. I loved reading the authors note and learning the events that lead up to the writing of this story, and the unique circumstances under which it was published.

Although the writing was simple, the characters really seemed to bloom off the page. Maurice's loneliness and longing for Clive was so real and sensitive I could feel it in my bones. For a book written in the earlier 20th century, this had so many nuances about homosexuality that you wouldn't expect to see from a book like this. It explored the struggles that our main characters went through as even showed Maurice trying to rid himself of this "disease" through hypnosis.

The last two pages really hit me as well.

"You care for me a little bit, I do think," he admitted, "but I can't hang all my life on a little bit. You don't. You hang yours on Anne. You don't worry whether your relation with her is platonic or not, you only know it's big enough to hang a life on. I can't hang mine on the five minutes you spare me from her and politics. You'll do anything for me except see me.
...

" You don't love me. I was yours once till death if you'd cared to keep me, but I'm someone else's now - I can't hang about whining for ever - and he's mine in a way that shocks you, but why don't you stop being shocked and attend to your own happiness?"

Oh my god, tell him Maurice!

There are so many things I can't possibly put to paper, but please know that this book should be required reading for all people in the world.

I should start by saying I really enjoyed this book but that it took a while to get to that point.
I read it on the recommendation of a BBC series about romance through the ages and I freely admit I that I only did so because it told the viewer how it would end.
I've never read anything by Forster before so I have no idea if this is his usual style, but the first 50-70% was a very confusing read. I think that may have been deliberate but as I said, I have no point of reference.
I love the last 30% or so and the ending is absolutely brilliant. It's a book that has a lot to say and the fact that it was written at the time it is set makes it all the more wonderful.
It is clever and hopeful and I liked knowing the characters thoughts and feelings, I love Alec's openness and felt for Maurice and his struggle to understand himself and society around him.
I heartily recommend it but can't quite give it five stars because of the first half.

my favourite part is that one paragraph in the last chapter where Maurice stands up to Clive and gives a moving speech about love. a very interesting novel, insightful about a different era although it is clear human emotions stay consistent throughout the years. the same battles are fought with more happy endings. it is indeed beautiful that Maurice got his too

Hørte den som lydbog og der gik nok lidt finesser tabt der. Og i øvrigt var der fejl i lydbogen.
