God, the way certain passages in this make me feel... E.M. Forster can really write.

Maurice knows he likes men, but everything in the religion and society he was brought up in, says he shouldn't and can't. He vacillates, he flounders, he longs. Even though the narrative moves briskly along, you get a visceral sense of his struggle.

This is beautiful work, and I wish the author could know about the rise of gay rights today.

Yes it took me almost a year to finish this book… nothing personal I am a slow reader and forget that books exist for months on end. ANYWAY, Maurice was an amazing read, challenging due to some of the language (hitherto!) yet smooth at the same time. My eyes would glide along each page and I’d lose track of time when reading especially as it started to pick up towards the middle/end. The only reason I gave a 4 star rating instead of 5 was the accessibility. Great story, especially for it being one of the first queer novels of the modern era. Sad and powerful but not tragic (yay for once!) read this book!! Especially if you’re into romance!

I knew this book was going go be important to me from the get go and yeah, it sure ended up making me cry. I was actually doing okay at the end but then I read Forster’s terminal note and absolutely started bawling. I’m so happy Alec and Maurice got their happy ending.

If Forster could do it in 1913 you literally have no excuse as a writer in 2024.
