This book was the equivalent of going on those kiddie rollercoasters. You don’t expect it to be a lot, and then it is. I picked this up because I thought it would be good. This is about a wealthy, white boy’s journey with his sexuality. I thought this was going to be more of a romance than a social commentary. I mean the process Maurice goes through definitely felt realistic; it was just hard to take him seriously because he’s a privileged brat. I thought this was going to be more of a romance than a social commentary. The only reason this is getting 3 stars and not 2 is because I think it has valuable talking points and analysis.

“Para tiempos mejores”

Desde el trasfondo del origen de esta obra hasta la conclusión y las notas finales, fue desgarrador, hermoso, angustiante y dolorosamente esperanzador. No puedo lograr expresar en palabras lo mucho que me tocó este libro con las mil emociones que me abrumó en cada página. Y, antes de que me diera cuenta, ya había simpatizado con Maurice y Clive quienes en un principio llegué a juzgar. Y lo sigo haciendo jsjsjs, pero el autor burló mi juicio y deseé desesperadamente un final feliz para ellos y floreciente conexión.

Eso, hasta que llegó Alec y pude ver y entender el por qué él sí fue el final feliz que Maurice merecía y Clive no. Y me sentí tan conmovida que todo el amor que Maurice sufrió, guardó y perdió por Clive por años fue entregado hacia alguien que le podía corresponder con la misma intensidad a pesar de su propia confusión y lucha. Aunque lo cierto es que no llegué a sentir la misma emoción que me causó el ciego enamoramiento y devoción que Maurice demostraba al principio por Clive, y sentí demasiado desconcertante su súbito romance con Alec. Alec fue un personaje que cumplía su función, pero lo sentí de papel y no de carne y hueso como los otros dos. Creo que me faltó más páginas para congeniar y entenderlo.

Aún así, mi corazón es egoístamente feliz porque Maurice y Alec se perdieron y amaron en los bosques hasta su último suspiro, mientras que Clive vivió envuelto en mentiras y pensando en Maurice hasta la fin de su vejez. (está muy confusa esta parte de la última página pero a mí me gusta pensar que así fue)✨

Are you looking for an mlm fiction that avoids hypersexualization, avoids excessive gay stereotypes, and has a genuinely happy ending?

This is definitely the book for you!

This story took me by surprise. It was authentic, and felt astonishingly casual in its presentation of gay love. Considering that this novel is over 100 years old, it completely defied my expectations. Ahead of its time, the story provides a lot of the things that so many modern LGBT+ stories lack, ESPECIALLY the happy ending.

All in all, Maurice is a fulfilling story about gay love that avoids needless plot devices, and grants the casual LGBT+ reader the wholesome story they deserve to hear.
