postponed the last chapter for a long time for no reason but wow. it's been a long time since i've read a book that made me feel so seen. maurice was a dick and misogynist but i feel connected to him. such beautiful writing and so nice to see a character and story like this, banal but romantic (even if it was played out by characters who were infuriating at times). you get to know maurice so deeply it hurts when he hurts, and you can truly understand the turmoil he's grappling with. but it isn't sad, it's lovely, this book is full of love. i need to read more of forster's stuff! also i watched the movie first, just as tender

my fav passages:

"Maurice's secret life can be understood now; it was part brutal, part ideal, like his dreams." (23)

"As soon as he thought about other people as real, Maurice became modest and conscious of sin: in all creation there could be no one as vile as himself: no wonder he pretended to be a piece of cardboard; if known as he was, he would be hounded out of the world." (30)

"A slow nature such as Maurice’s appears insensitive, for it needs time even to feel. Its instinct is to assume that nothing either for good or evil has happened, and to resist the invader. Once gripped, it feels acutely, and its sensations in love are particularly profound." (60)

" The brilliancy of day was around him, he stood upon the mountain range that overshadows youth, he saw." (62)

"And their love scene drew out, having the inestimable gain of a new language. No tradition overawed the boys. No convention settled what was poetic, what absurd. They were concerned with a passion that few English minds have admitted, and so created untrammelled. Something of exquisite beauty arose in the mind of each at last, something unforgettable and eternal, but built of the humblest scraps of speech and from the simplest emotions." (97)

"Love had caught him out of triviality and Maurice out of bewilderment in order that two imperfect souls might touch perfection." (101)

I started off reading this and was having a hard time getting into the writing. I switched to the audiobook and it was so much better. There’s a lot of angst. Loved it.
