I enjoyed the story. It felt unfinished but since it was published posthumously, maybe he wasn’t done.

One of two E.M. Forster novels that I haven't read yet. Fascinating given when it was written and published after his death. A classic in every way.
It was a rough start at first, because I found Maurice so damn unlikeable, but the second half picked up and I can see why this book is so important. Wow a happy ending for gay characters in 1910s? So refreshing. Definitely a bit of a period piece and I maybe could’ve used some annotations for references and more slangy terms, but still ultimately an enjoyable read. Despite his misogyny and classism and snobbishness, Maurice’s loneliness and struggles to make sense of himself are moving, and make his slow character development ultimately feel rewarding.
I had not expected to like this as much as I did
The Merchant Ivory film was a favorite in my youth but I’d never bothered to read the book, expecting it to be far more British, aka dull. Even Forster alludes to this in his final note when he asks,”What Italian lad…?” But I found the book to be equal to the film and Alec to be the character I love most in both, for his forthright honesty and strength of love. Does it read as dated as Forster also says? Perhaps, but the love story itself is still worth the odd distraction of a long disused word or two.

I really enjoyed reading this book. My favorite character is in fact Alec!

Una historia adictiva, que tiene tantas capas, llena de redescubrimiento y lamentaciones, pero con un final digno.
La narrativa es tan atrapante, sin duda lo recomiendo tantísimo.
