When you do read this book, as I think you should, please read the ending notes. It explains a lot about the context.
As someone who has struggled in some of the same ways that Maurice has, I think his ability to accept himself for who he is and fight back against societal standards is half impressive and half because he is of immense privilege. However, due to the time period it was written in and the ability for E.M. Forster to write a novel that aptly describes the weird mix of liberation and shame of being queer without the need to have a tragic ending, I'm happy I read it.

“I was yours once till death if you'd cared to keep me, but I'm someone else's now... and he's mine in a way that shocks you, but why don't you stop being shocked, and attend to your own happiness.”
