The plot is a unique time capsule into the stations of class and societal constraints around homosexuality in Edwardian England. The character development feels stilted because of the period language and understanding of sexuality, but the author’s notes at the end give some additional clarity.

This was a beautiful book to start my year of reading off with. Though I haven’t been the biggest fan of Forster in the past, but this book is wonderful. One of the things that drew me in the most was how Forster talked about religion and sexuality

This was perfect and every word was a gift

Hmmm, I really don't have much to say about Maurice by E.M. Forster. Written in the early 1900s, Forster wrote this story of a young man discovering his sexuality and facing an unaccepting society. The story was fine and I enjoyed it well enough, but honestly, I found Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin much more nuanced, interesting and enjoyable.
