Sadly, I think the movie version is better.

4,5⭐️!!!

Didn't love it. Recognize it's importance, as a record of its time and the era in which it was finally published...but otherwise...m'eh.

Describes the alienation and feeling of rejection really well and overall subtlety that Forster deals with the subject is very appealing. Attitudes towards homosexuality may be tied to the era it was written but I think that our modern society has some similarities. I loved the fact that by writing a happy ending Forster questions the condemning England.

oh Maurice… this movie is one of my favorites, although I admit after the first time, I just watch the first 30 minutes and pretend it ends there. I was so excited to read this and I feel like the fact that I started it in october and finished in may speaks for itself given how short it is. it was insufferable. I think this book singlehandedly killed my love for the movie. the two main characters are self described misogynists and are two of the biggest self-consumed d**che b*gs on the planet. I found all of it rather unbearable, so as far as i’m concerned: watch the first 30 minutes of the movie, then call it a day.

I cannot recommend this book enough, the story is satisfying, the language is simple and the reassurance that gay people can have a happy ending in 1913 is the energy I needed. The terminal note by the author makes me feel like I am reading a letter from him to me personally. It has made my year!

Favourite book of the year so far. Exquisite.

Nothing has changed in his life. Nothing remained in it. He was back with his loneliness as it had been before Clive, as it was after Clive, and would now be for ever. He had failed, and that wasn't the saddest: he had seen Alec fail. In a way they were one person. Love had failed. Love was an emotion through which you occasionally enjoyed yourself. It could not do things.

made me yearn a little too hard on vacation. gut-wrenching!
