I got this as Audible's free holiday story a year ago, and it took me a while to get around to listening to it. It was enjoyable, but not the best Holmes story. Alan Cumming's narration was great, but the mystery itself seemed to be solved a bit too quickly. It's sort of tangentially a holiday story (set around a Christmas goose), but the holiday is so unimportant to the story that it could easily be read any time of year.

While this adventure may not have as many twists as many other Homes and Watson stories, I do like the overall holiday message. If you're looking for a Christmas story that has not been overdone by the media, then this freebie for Audible members is worth listening to.

My favorite parts are the analysis of the hat and the final whodunnit with the "What are we going to do about it?" piece. Cummings does a fantastic job reading this story. I felt like he flawlessly transformed himself into all of these distinct characters. I've read this story a few times, but hearing Cummings narrate made me reflect upon the character of Breckinridge. I usually pass him off as a puffy, bit of a bully comic character with necessary information. This reading made me feel a little sorry for Breckinridge. People bothering him and he just wants to make his Christmas sales. And, of course, Cummings' reading of Holmes and Watson is perfect.

[b:The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle|2395757|The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle (The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, #7)|Arthur Conan Doyle|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1348518958s/2395757.jpg|2402774] is a short Sherlock Holmes story. That's one point in it's favor. Another is that the narrator of the audiobook version - Alan Cummings (Eli Gold on The Good Wife) - is great. I'm a fan of Sherlock Holmes though, so I enjoyed the good, but short, trip into his world. I liked the plot just fine, but there was nothing there that truly gripped me, and nothing that would make me want to hear it again.

A charming tale, it captures the christmas spirit and energy without being heavy-handed. A nice little twist at the end and despite it's simple nature, is a very fun detective story with a surprise.

Feel good little Christmas story from Sherlock Holmes's master storyteller Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Enjoyable, and a really quick read. Very timely so, too, as we are almost at Christmas and I love reading Christmas stories during this time of the year :)
