I was really excited when I seen this book came out, I really enjoyed getting to learn more about Sally and read from her perspective. It was an interesting twist on the original novel and I don't think it feels to far fetched like I thought it might. It was a really great read for Halloween.

Long Live the Pumpkin Queen is a continuation of the story after the movie The Nightmare Before Christmas. This book follows Sally Skellington who is now married to Jack, the Pumpkin King. However, she finds herself struggling with her queenly duties and when she accidentally releases a creature into her town, it's up to her to save Halloween Town.
I am going to be totally honest and say that I was very hesitant going into this book. The Nightmare Before Christmas is one of my favorites movies which I watch every year around Halloween. However, this book blew my expectations out of the water and was amazing. I loved it so much that I can see this being a re-read for me every Halloween.
First off, Shea Earnshaw was the perfect author to write this story. It's clear that she really loves the movie and paid excruciating detail to every aspect of the movie and the atmosphere. She perfectly captured the atmosphere of the movie in this book and, even when adding to the lore, still managed to make it feel like the movie. I could see everything playing out perfectly in my mind.
I thought that she did such an amazing job with Sally's story. I loved learning more about Sally's backstory and seeing her grow as a character. She really came into her own with this story but didn't lose the essence of who she is. I thought her backstory was so interesting and I wanted even more of it as I loved really learning about her. I also thought the plot was so well done and really added to the story of this world.
Overall, I adored this book. It was a quick and easy read and something I can see myself picking up every single Halloween to re-read. If you loved the movie, I would highly recommend reading the book.

"It was never Lock, Shock, and Barrel who did this, as I first thought. Everyone is asleep...because there is a monster in Halloween Town."
"You really had trouble with this book." my sister
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It was so nice being able to see all these characters again in a sequel story to their 1993 movie. This new story - bringing us back to the land of holiday towns - worked as a whole, and its finer details were also nice reading. The King and Queen of Halloween Town - Jack and Sally Skellington - were so sweet together. We also get some more backstory on Sally and Dr. Finkelstein, which was a unique take. Something that bothered me a bit was how uncertain Sally was. I understand where she was coming from. Her whole life, she was made to believe she was a creation and nothing more. And all of a sudden, she's thrust into the position of Queen, and queens usually tend to be "someone." Additionally, she's thrust into doing things, wearing things, etc. that she normally hadn't done - and wasn't sure she wanted to do. (Even though she reiterates a few times that she doesn't regret marrying Jack, which is something she wanted.) There were parts that were hard for me to imagine - mostly Jack and Sally's honeymoon in Valentine's Town. But overall, I really enjoyed this book.

Whimsical. Resonating. Empowering. I’ve adored Shea’s previous books and this one is no exception. Picking up with Sally & Jack’s wedding right at the end of The Nightmare Before Christmas, LLtPQ explores the anxiety of stepping into new expectations, discovering your place in the world, and drawing on the power of dreams. LLtPQ is diverse and comforting, and is completely appropriate for younger YA readers, even upper MG, while still being enjoyable for adults.
