Tidelands

Philippa Gregory

This is the first novel I’ve read by Phillipa and I liked it! I felt there was good mix between the history of this period (1640s, England) and the romance between the MCs. Calling it “romance” feels silly because the book itself was so dark throughout, portraying the real struggles of this time (immense poverty, plague, sexism, radical religion, witch mania, etc.) and it does not hold back. At one point the male MC, James, points out the “ugliness” of how the village interacts with one another. It was really harsh and almost a culture shock to read which means, it gave a really good representation of what life was actually like during this period.
challenging dark sad tense slow-paced

A good book but a stressful read!

Love Philippa Gregory and have not been disappointed in any of her books.
I especially loved this, the first in a series as she focuses on the plight of women, starting way back.
Good on you Philippa and can't wait for the upcoming delivery of more of your books!

Loved this book.

Just couldn't get into it. Stopped reading a few chapters in....

I've been sort of hesitant in jumping on the Philippa Gregory bandwagon, I love historical fiction but always tried to shy away from books that relied too heavily on actual historical figures and most of her books seem to do this that. But boy, have I been denying myself some great reads, Tideland is an interesting book set during the English Civil War in a small coastal town of Tideland centered around Alinor, a beautiful midwife who's husband is missing, and James a stranger in town hides a great secret that could get them both hanged.
Tidelands is a steady read where even though I had an idea that was going to happen I was still surprised by how it happened and the tiny cliffhanger that makes you want to grab the second book but at the same time would still leave you a bit satisfied if you couldn't get your hand on the second book soon enough.

DNF

poor woman and priest/spy hiding as a preacher fall in love. Priest get local lord to give her son work. Priest makes failed attempt at rescuing an exiled King Charles. Daughter falls in love with local farmer and everyone works hard for her dowry. Mum and daughter both get pregnant. Daughter steals money for dowry and mum gets half drowned on a mill wheel for a witch.

Absolutely loved this story and by the time I was a quarter of the way through I was hooked and had great difficulty putting the book down to go to work! Must read for historical fiction lovers. As usual Philippa Gregory doesn't disappoint! Can't wait for the next instalment.
