This really grew on me. I'm looking forward to book #2
I'm fairly ignorant about the English civil war of the mid-1600s and this is my favorite way to explore a new slice of history, with a large scoop of drama!

I was quite disappointed with this book. Having been an avid Philippa Gregory reader for many years I found it quite slow and many chapters not adding to the plot.
I did enjoy the ending, but I found some of the events that occurred quite contrary to the character development built at the beginning. I have already been gifted the sequel so I hope that it may be a good read having had the groundwork laid out in this first book.
Whilst disappointed, I still love Philippa Gregory and acknowledge that the differing nature of characters may have added to my disappointment in this book in my comparison to her other series.

I really liked this book. I liked that it was set somewhere close to me and that the characters were commoners. I find the whole witchcraft thing difficult to handle though as I think with my modern mind and it seems inconceivable to me that people who were not evil would accuse someone of being a witch, let alone actually believe that they were real. It makes me very cross and I feel like if I were back then I would be accused of being a witch because I wouldn't be able to keep my opinions to myself and that would piss off the men. Let's face it, accusations of witchcraft are just misogyny by another name. I thought the main character was well rounded and most of the others too. I disliked the daughter because anyone could have seen what happened happening, I'll say no more. Good stuff and I will definitely read the next in the series.
Honestly this book was infuriating. I know this is going to be a series, but it was such an awkward way to end a book. The pacing was so odd. Nothing happens for 90% of the book, and then it ends just as it's getting good. This is not the series for me.

I read over 300 pages of this dreadful book and decided I couldn’t read anymore. I did skip to the last 10 pages to find out what happened. Not sure I missed much in the 100 pages I skipped.
I found Philippa Gregory in high school and devoured all of her books that I could get my hands on. I knew she was a good author, but being as that was nearly 15 years ago, I had forgotten just how incredible she was.
This book is a stunning, rich tapestry of storytelling. It entrances you from the first page and leaves you mesmerized. Gregory blends historical fiction and fact so completely that it becomes hard to know where one stops and the other begins.
This book tells a story of a woman who seems like such a minor character, only to transform into a personal friend. I became enmeshed in her story, desperate to know what would happen to her, and if she would turn out all right in the end.
This book has it all. Every point of good storytelling (for me, at least). Magic, history, intrigue, romance, and family loyalty. I'm grateful to the author and the publisher for a copy of this book for review, as I am now eager to go devour more of Gregory's books the same way I did as a teenager.

Characters are mostly well thought out, and the story is engaging. I enjoyed the book, and thought it was well written. The four star rating is because I feel like the romantic tension was a bit hurried, and a few of the main characters could have been "fleshed out" more. I feel as if she took care to fully create the female characters, while leaving the male characters a bit one dimensional. Aside from this, I enjoyed the book and look forward to the next installment.
